The Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) was part of a 3-day Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) and Risk Management training organized by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria.
The training which was organized for field operatives particularly regulators and civil society organizations, with the theme: Building A Culture of Risk Awareness and Response Through Partnership and Capacity Development was in a bid to ensure and foster safety for all in the Ogoni Cleanup value chain.

Speaking at the event, Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Professor Nenibarini Zabbey stated that the workshop is imperative to strengthen the occupational health safety (OHS) capacity of all actors involved in remediation and restoration efforts from field workers to contractors, regulators and civil society partners as well as provide an opportunity to build shared understanding of health and safety associated with environmental remediation in hydrocarbon-impacted zones.
According to Professor Zabbey, the occupational health and safety of actors remain the core pillar of the Project’s remediation strategy, stressing its commitment to implementing international best practices for site and environmental protection while urging for collective commitment that prioritizes regulatory compliance and ethical responsibility leading to a holistic safety ecosystem for the Project.

On his part, the coordinator of Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD), Dr. Nubari Nabie represented by Head of Department, Environment and Conservation, Dr Tammy Cookey appreciated HYPREP for putting on such a laudable training for Civil Society Organizations and their regulators.
He informed such training should be organized by HYPREP on a regular base to help keep her regulators in a check and ensure all safety measures are applied towards achieving the goals set by HYPREP in the remediation process.

The training was hosted from Monday, 26th May – Wednesday, 28th May, 2025 was attended by participants drawn from HYPREP, NOSDRA, Rivers State Ministry of Environment, CEHRD, SWAYA and SDN facilitated by the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON).
