MITIGATING OIL RE-POLLUTION IN THE NIGER DELTA TRAINING MANUAL

Remediation project implementation in the Niger Delta is consistently hindered by the issue of Oil Re-Pollution. The issue of Oil Re-Pollution is compounded by internal community division, including weak leadership structures and competing factions, which erode community cohesion and foster deep mistrust. This fragmentation disrupts crucial communication channels between communities, government, NGOs, remediation contractors, and responsible petroleum operators, regardless of direct causation of contamination.
The manual focuses on Understanding Oil Re-Pollution, cause and sources, Environmental and Health impact
of Oil Re-pollution, Socio Cultural and Economic impact of Oil Re-Pollution, roles of community stakeholders in advocacy towards Oil Re-pollution, Tools and Strategies for Community Sensitization and Community commitment and Next steps. Employing a citizen participatory approach and feedback mechanisms, this manual addresses the critical issue of oil re-pollution. By underscoring the importance of community involvement on the issue of stopping Oil Re-pollution after remediation, the manual serves as a vital tool for government agencies ( most especially the Hydrocarbon Pollution remediation Project), NGOs and community stakeholders striving for successful environmental restoration.
