Restoring Mangrove requires various processes. One of such processes is the establishment of a Mangrove Nursery Site where mangrove seedlings known as propagules are nurtured until they are grown before replanting to a permanent site.

CEHRD implementing a Global Environmental Fund Small Grant Project (GEF-SGP) Nigeria, United Nations Development Programme funded project titled: “Accelerating Community-Led Mangrove Restoration”, has established a Mangrove Nursery Site in Kono community, Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The establishment of the Nursery site is aimed to nurse over 5,000 propagules. CEHRD intends to use the site as a training tool to equip target communities on the processes involved in mangrove restoration.

As part of their contribution and commitment to the project, Kono community provided the land where the Mangrove Nursery Site was established. As a community-led project, community members cleared the site and erected the nursery while CEHRD supervised the entire process.

Community members expressed gratitude to CEHRD and its funder, GEF-SGP, UNDP for bringing such laudable project to Kono community. They noted that the gesture is able to open them into being mangrove-preneurs, restore biodiversity to their community.
