Human Rights & Governance
CEHRD undertakes human rights campaigns, advocacy, and litigation, on behalf of victims of human rights violations. This program pursues good governance through engagement, civic, and voter’s education. Also, anti-arms proliferation and unregulated arms trade campaigns are coordinated under this category. CEHRD monitors small arms trade and its misuse or abuse in the hands of government security forces and non-state actors like militia, armed civilian (“cult”) groups, gangsters, etc. We also monitor its consequences on the people, especially women and children. Furthermore, under the Human Rights Program, CEHRD works towards its prevention, minimization and eradication through outreach, education, and legislative campaigns. At the core of the human rights program of CEHRD is the Child Rights Project.
National Endowment for Democracy (NED) has funded CEHRD’s human rights violation and abuse documentation and reporting projects –leading to the publication of annual human rights scorecard report in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. NED is funding CEHRD’s ongoing project to train citizen journalists in Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States to be able to tell their human rights violation and abuse stories using social media platforms.
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) funded CEHRD to set up “situation room” for the south-south zone during the 2011 national elections in Nigeria. In 2015, CEHRD received a grant from the United Nations Democracy Program UNDP to carry out Civic and Voter Education in the 6 South-South States of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River Delta, Edo and Rivers States. The project built the capacity of citizens at the grassroots and discussed envisaged challenges that will be faced during the general election and ways to ameliorate them.
In the same year, CEHRD was part of the coalition that observed the general elections using the Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) methodology. The method, which is also known as Quick Count is the use of statistics and information technology to observe the whole electoral process. During this process, an INEC accredited non-partisan observers send coded messages to a central data poll from sampled polling units. The process helped verify official INEC result and also gauges the credibility of result that would be declared. CEHRD coordinated Rivers and Bayelsa States.
CEHRD implemented the European Union (EU) Tomorrow is a New Day (TND) projects (phase 1 and 2) in Rivers State. The TND projects reintegrated ex-militants and ex-cultists into their communities using tools such as trauma healing, solidarity events, etc. The project beneficiaries were granted amnesty by the Federal Government of Nigeria but could not reintegrate in their communities because of fear of reprisal attacks by surviving victims of their militancy violence.
In February 2017, CEHRD got a funding from Amnesty International, Sweden to implement the project entitled: “Promoting Social Justice for Women in Oil Polluted Communities of the Niger Delta: The Common Ground Approach Towards A Sustainable Livelihood System”. The project, which sampled 3 communities in Bayelsa and 5 communities in Rivers State, investigated how pollution specifically affects women. One of the project output is an evidence-based research ‘Adrift Fortunes: Painful testimonies of women in oil polluted communities in the Niger Delta’. It is centred around the effect of oil pollution on women in the Niger Delta. The research depicts the heavy reliance of women on their environment for their daily survival. It unveils the fact that the delicate nature of the women folk makes them more vulnerable to health challenges when exposed to pollution. Consequently, women bear the greater brunt of oil pollution. The research conducted on the project shows how women struggle on daily basis to grapple with the effects of pollution: loss of livelihood, battered reproductive health, heightened social vices, and erosion of their cultural heritage.
