The paramount ruler of federated Ikarama communities, Yenegoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, His Royal Highness Wariebi Jonah Berebozigha has eulogies the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) for its efforts towards addressing the issues of oil re-pollution in Niger Delta.

The Ama-miepinamo-Owei the 13th appreciated CEHRD’s efforts when he received CEHRD’s team in his palace during the awareness rally on mitigating Oil Re-pollution in Yenegoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

Speaking, His Royal Highness Berebozigha stated that the efforts of CEHRD and other civil society organizations have been fruitful as there is noticeable decrease in re-pollution in the community noting that pathetically, Ikarama community is one of the communities with the highest number of oil pollution, with no help coming their way.

The paramount ruler of the federated Ikarama communities stated that the communities are in need of health facilities as their health status and the life expectancy of the people in the communities are decreasing on daily basis.

He debunked the assertion that the multiple oil pollutions happening in the community are sabotages while revealing that some are from rusted pipelines, while some other sources cannot be traced as it flows in the community river to other communities, destroying their water bodies and environment.

Earlier, a staff of Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, CEHRD, Mr. Meshach Uyi speaking on behalf of CEHRD’s team stated that the reason for the awareness creation is to enlighten the community members of the need to stop oil re-pollution in their communities, noting that the act is more disastrous to the environment and communities than the first pollution.

It is of not that CEHRD had carried out two rallies and trained fifty (50) community vanguards in Ogbia and Yenegoa Local Government Areas in Bayelsa State. These are part of activities on the Mitigating Oil Re-pollution in Niger Delta project implemented by CEHRD, sponsored by True Costs Initiative.
