CEHRD TRAINS STUDENTS OF COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL, ALESA-ELEME IN ELEME LGA, RIVERS STATE NIGERIA ON VAPP LAW

– Egbilika Josiah

The training of students on the provisions of the violence against person (prohibitions) [VAPP] law is always an eye opener. It fluxes memories and create satisfaction on the part of the students for being part of the training. The facilitator always receives applause after her engagement with the students; exposing to them salient crimes they often overlook and ending with the biblical Divinity statement, “Let there be light”.

The training in Comprehensive High School, Alesa-Eleme was not far from what has been obtainable from other schools. The students judiciously paid attention to Barrister Obiageli Oraka-Oifoghe as she took them through the provisions of the #riversstatevapplaw and how they should henceforth end the culture of #silence.

She made them understand rape, forceful ejection from home, harmful tradition practices, stalking, frustrating investigation, etc. are all crimes against the State. She also brought to their understanding what Gender Based Violence is and how if they remain silent, the effect it will lead to.

The students expressed their joys in the evaluation form giving to them. Some of them wrote, “The training was interesting, the facilitator tried enough, we enjoyed it and we are thankful”; “The training was ok and I enjoyed it. I learnt a lot today. Thanks.”; To me, I really enjoyed this training and it also met my expectations and I have now changed my mindset not to be abused”, etc.

#cehrd is glad to know that her project, “Enhancing Prevention and Response to Gender Based Violence in Rivers State” is affecting lives positively. #cehrd is glad for the support from #EuropeanUnion
